Rocketnumbernine: Matthew and Toby

September 26, 2010 Electronic, Experimental, Jazz No Comments

A year ago, the two brothers Ben and Tom Page released their largely improvised debut LP “You reflect Me” on Trace recordings. It was their first print after 4 years touring and playing their unique jazz-influenced experimental electronic music with live drums and raw electronics.
Since then, Rocketnumbernine, named after the Sun Ra’s song, has been busy touring with Four Tet and Pantha du Prince, two artists already under the spotlight giving them a real kick to notoriety.

They recently did the Gilles Peterson BBC’s worlwide show and have just released their new single “Matthew and Toby”, in memory of Steve Reid.

The single is out on Kieran “Four Tet” Hebden ’s label Text records. Actually, this is Kieran Hebden who introduced them a few years ago to Steve Reid. They clearly have been magnetised by the spirit of the legend jazz drummer who passed away earlier this year. This track is a great recognition to the memory of Steve Reid.
The band will be supporting  Caribou in november and december and  will play few shows also with Four Tet and James Holden.

Listen “Matthew and Toby” on Soundcloud.

You can also listen to the Four Text remix, first track of the Four Tet Fact Mix proposed in the Podcast and free mp3 menu.

Dom Thomas: The Exploding Disco Inevitable

September 23, 2010 Electronic, Psychedelic, Turkish No Comments

6 years ago, Finders Keepers records appeared on earth with a clear target: to be the worldwide groove provider. The mission was to reissue some weird psychedelic sounds from all around the globe, from space-age Turkish protest songs and Welsh rare-beats to persian Funk and Bollywood beats. The mission has been achieved, helped by their Californian alter ego Stones Throw. Not sure it helps to understand which sound we are talking about, but be sure these guys know their stuff. Mental Vinyl diggers looking for the perfect groove, taking pride on ressurecting lost vinyls. The Manchester label is home for Andy Votel, the Gaslamp killer and Dom Thomas.
After the acclaimed “Miscellaneous Mutant Mishaps”, Dom Thomas released the “exploding disco inevitable”, an explosive mix of Denizen Funk, Psyche Rock and Proto House, crossing boundaries and defying genre classification. So refreshing and groovy.

The Avalanches’ second album

July 18, 2010 Electronic 1 Comment

The Avalanches’ webmaster recently hinted that the Australian band was going to release a second album. After recording Ariel Pink’s guest vocals, the album will be finished.
How serious should we take this news knowing that the second album was already announced in 2005 and 2008. Some said that they are on their way to clear the samples. Well, if there are 3500 vinyl samples to clear like on their first acclaimed LP “Since I left you”, we might have to wait for another year.
Let’s wait and see and just pray that it will happen.
Indeed, The Melbourne electronic outfit released a first album that is widely considered as one of the best album of the 2000s.
The Avalanches are at their ease in mixing acid house, funk, disco, hip hop, ambient, ethnic and psychedelic sounds and are the proof that music always evolves by remixing itself.
They are not only samples maniacs but party animals and groove providers, their live shows have the reputation to make the crowd crazy. They have been highly demanded remixers, they worked with Manic Street Preachers, Belle and Sebastian, Badly Drawn Boy, Franz Ferdinand to name a few.

Now, let’s hope they will give us another reason to party and release their long awaited second album.
